Parliament proposes general election date

A Snap general election has been called for july 28 after a unique move saw opposition parties and disaffected members of ruling National unity party (UBP) join forces to table a motion of no confidence in the goverment. The date for polling was set by parliament's Legal and political Affairs Commite made up of UBP depuites and others from the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) after rival suggestions of September 29 and July 21 were put foward. The Dissenting MP, had proposed te later date. but the prime Minister Irsen Kucuk countered with the earlier suggestion seen as an attempt to thawrt any chance of his rebel MP.s forming their own political party. Meanwhile the no confidence motion is set to be discussed on Monday by Mp's who will decide wheather a full debate should take place.

If it does a vote muste be helf after 24hours. In first for the TRNC.s political history the motion was jointly put forward on Monday by CTP three from Social democrat party TDP and two from the Democrat party DP

Decision the be ratified by Parliament

The July 28th Election date agreed by the Legal and political Affairs commitee, led by UBP Girne deputy Mehmet Tancer, must now be ratified by MPs.

It is due to be taken up by Parliement tomorrow and Finalised on the same day.

Speaker of Parliement Hasan Bozer said a minimum of two months was needed for the procedures to hold a general election. This made July 28 the earliest date, he said.
