Officials have vowed to get tough over blocked watercourses blamed for flooding which devastated part of the Girne area this week after more than a month's worth of rain fell overnight.

Schools were closed and power cut off in several areas as fireman and Civil Defence and municpal teams were called to deal with 25 reports of flooding 10 in Karaoglanoglu from water overflowing out of blocked river and stream beds.
The area had been the focus of recent efforts to clear water courses of debris and other obstacles including garden walls on a housing estate near Ozankoy after Girne Districk Officer Mehmet Envergil warned in an interview with Cyprus Today, of the Flood risk they and illegal consruction posed.
